This rapid review was produced to inform how registered dietitians working in local public health agencies in Ontario can support the development and enhancement of local sustainable food systems. We sought to learn more about the governance structures that currently support local food system transformation; identify who has voice, agency, or power within local food system governance; how the change process is supported; and determine how the effectiveness of these governance structures and processes are measured.

A letter from ODPH to the Childhood Obesity Foundation and the Heart and Stroke Foundation endorsing the ‘Ottawa Principles’. These are a series of principles that outline the scope and regulatory measures needed to curb children’s exposure to persuasive marketing of food and beverages. While the principles do differ slightly from our organization’s position, we have chosen to fully support them.

OSNNPH Response to Nutrition for Healthy Term Infants 6-24 months draft document

ODPH letter to Prime Minister Stephen Harper in support of Bill c-460. ODPH urges the Government of Canada to demonstrate its leadership by implementing a robust and significant strategy to reduce the amount of sodium consumed by Canadians.

Also, a call for more support -- ODPH encourages individual health units as well as interested organizations to express support for ODPH's NutriSTEP® letter and its specific requests. With requests for support for NutriSTEP®, please feel free to use the following "asks" document.

ODPH was invited to provided recommendations to the Senior Care Strategy, outlines in Ontario's Action Plan for Health Care. 

ODPH submission to the Healthy Kids Panel calling for the panel to take an upstream approach to curbing childhood overweight in Ontario. On October 5, 2012 ODPH had a meeting with Phyllis Tanaka, RD to review our priorities. 

ODPH is advocating for the development of an Ontario Food and Nutrition Strategy (OFNS), and has contributed to this as a member of the Ontario Collaborative Group for Healthy Eating and Physical Activity (OCGHEPHA) – a provincial collaboration of not-for-profit, public health and academic organizations dedicated to addressing population-based issues relating to healthy eating, physical activity, healthy weights and the determinants of health, including food access, availability and adequacy. In April 2012, ODPH sponsored an Association of Local Public Health Agencies (alPHa) resolution calling for the developing of a provincial food and nutrition strategy.

ODPH, through the work of the Family Health Nutrition Advisory Group provided feedback to Health Canada on the draft document Nutrition for Healthy Term Infants

The government of Ontario released Ontario's Action Plan for Health Care. Part of the government's action plan is to reduce childhood obesity by 20% over five years. ODPH took the opportunity to share its recommendations on key issues and features of a childhood weight strategy.

On behalf of the Ontario Dietitians in Public Health (ODPH), we are writing to the Food Directorate to express our concerns about the introduction of caffeine and caffeine citrate in non-cola carbonate beverages (i.e., carbonated soft drinks) and to urge labelling regulations, should this change in current caffeine formulation regulations occur.

ODPH is requesting Best Start consider changing their caffeine during pregnancy recommendation back to 300 mg to align with the current Health Canada (Public Health Agency of Canada) recommendation.

The Ministry acknowledges our letter and concerns and states that the "Department recommends that the trans fat content of vegetable oils and soft, spreadable margerines be limited to two percent of the total fat content".

ODPH urges the Ministry of Children and Youth Services to revise the Nutrition Section in the Day Nurseries Act (DNA) to reflect the most recent recommendations in Health Canada's Eating Well With Canada's Food Guide.
